Winston Binney Midge ~ 6' 3” ~ 2/2 ~ 2.93oz. ~ 4wt.~ New ~ Serial No. 4 ~ Check out this quality-built small stream offering from the bench of southern Michigan’s Winston Binney. Mr. Binney formerly finished out cane rods for his friend Larry Foster, the late President of the H.L. Leonard Rod Company, during the time in which Mr. Foster owned the Leonard name. He’s been restoring cane rods as well as assembling graphite & glass rods since the late 1960s. During the 1980s, he became acquainted with Larry Foster and wrapped and finished a number of Leonard cane rods for him in exchange for furnishings (reel seat parts, guides, thread, etc.). He began hand-planing bamboo rods in the 1990s and bought a hand mill from Tom Morgan in 2000 which he used exclusively for final tapers. This rod was built in 2008 on a Wayne Cattanach taper and features attractive honey-tone cane wrapped in copper brown silks tipped black, carmel agate stripper housed in a black nickel frame, bronze light wire snakes, black tip tops, smooth and tight fitting blued N/S ferrules that give a satisfying pop when separated, and a nicely executed varnished finish. The business end of the butt section is fitted with a comfortable cigar grip (original plastic still on the grip), nicely figured polished walnut seat with D/L'ing cap and ring hardware and HK loop. The rod comes with a soft cloth bag with hang tag and black aluminum tube with brass end cap and collar completed with the maker’s label. The brisk medium action is well suited for dry fly work in tight spaces and will reach out to 30-35 feet when paired with a Cortland Peach WF-4 using both conventional and roll-casts and will also handle a 3 nicely. It will make someone is a faithful companion for years to come and would be a welcome addition to the quiver of any small stream angler. $995 $895

D.J. Duck Model 206 ~ 7.5' ~ 2/2 ~ 3.6 oz. ~ 5 wt. ~ Serial No. 2011 ~ As New ~ Douglas Duck was a talented maker from Texas who sadly passed away in 2001. He had acquired a well-earned reputation for building fine-quality rods based on a variety of classic tapers. Each rod was meticulously handcrafted from the finest extra select pre and post-embargo cane. The cane was oven tempered in the culm, hand split, hand straightened (to eliminate cross graining) and hand planed to exacting tolerances. Interestingly, the spiral node pattern was configured in the firing order of a six cylinder engine, so that no section of a rod has nodes appearing on more than one flat, and as far away from each other on adjacent flats. This rod was built in 2000 on one of the best tapers available, the Garrison 206, and features an attractive shade of light carmel-colored cane, translucent tan silks (brown at the tip-tops, ferrule stations and grip check), quality furnishings including a mildrum-style stripper, black snakes and tip-tops, smooth and tight fitting Swiss Super -Z- style ferrules give a satisfying pop when separated and an unparalleled varnish finish. R.L. Winston ~ 8.5' ~ 2/2 ~ 4 3/4 oz. ~ 6wt ~ SN 5907 ~ EXC-(exceptions noted) ~ This early hollowbuilt San Francisco Winny classic was built in 1940 by Lew Stoner and Red Loskot in the original Bryant Street shop on and appears to have been rewrapped and/or over-coated as evidenced by the shiny newish looking wraps and varnish, likely done by Winston. The rod features an attractive shade of light carmel-colored cane, putty silks tipped burgundy at the HK, signature wraps, ferrule stations and tip tops, mildrum stripper followed by two smaller diameter bronze strippers on the butt, chrome snakes and tip tops and smooth working ferrules with the hallmark putty silk overwrapping on the male and female housings. There is also an inch long protective wrap, likely added when the rod was re-wrapped, on the butt section that appear to be covering a glue line inconsistency. The business end of the butt section is fitted with a modified wells grip, screw D/L’ing bakelite seat, exposed bakelite WC and folding ring HK. The rod comes with a rose colored SF Winston-labeled bag and aluminum tube, sans label. The smooth, medium to medium fast-action throws a tight loop, for me best with a Cortland Peach DT-6. This 1-tip version features attractive light honey tone cane with deep burgundy "whippings" tipped red and full intermediates on the tip section, clear agate stripper, muted reverse twist chrome snakes, bridged tip-top with clear agate insert, smooth and tight fitting blued ferrules (stamped 11) that give a satisfying pop when separated and a nicely executed varnish finish. The tip section is approximately an inch and half shorter than the butt (made that way). The business end of the butt section has a modified Wells grip that continues down to form the cork seat fitted with D/L’ing cap and ring hardware and folding ring HK. The side of the butt cap carries the Hardy’s die stamp, The rod comes with the original 2-compartment burgundy and black aluminum tube with golf cap and collar and the blue/silver Hardy label. The rod has a stout medium-fast action that comfortably tosses a ton of line. It will easily handle a 7 or 8 of your choosing. A good choice for jacks, Atlantic salmon, bass and larger trout and looks like it has not yet seen the water. Priced for immediate sale. $495
Edwards “Quadrate” #50 ~ 9' ~ 3/1 ~ 5.6oz. ~ 7wt. ~ EXC (exceptions noted) ~ This Mt Carmel, CT quad features an attractive shade of honey-tone cane with golden nodes, brown silks tipped gold with alternating signatures wraps on the butt section, mildrum stripper, black snakes and tip-top, smooth and tight fitting blued N/S ferrules that give a resounding pop when separated and a nicely executed glass smooth varnish finish that may have been redone at some point in the past. The rod has a light set that does not affect performance and one foot of the last snake guide on the mid-section was rewrapped in clear silk. The business end of the butt section is fitted with a modified light cigar grip, black pyralin seat with matching screw U/L’ing hardware and black grip checks. The folding ring HK is missing. From the famous writings of the late Martin Keane comes the following passage… “Don’t draw any conclusions about an Edwards Quad rod until you’ve actually fished it under normal conditions – wiggling it around in some dealer’s showroom will tell you absolutely nothing. The Quad is mighty different when working under the weight of a properly fitted line. It is an amazing instrument with great power-and considerably more delicacy- than most anglers imagine.” The rod comes with a replacement bag and leather tube. The strong medium to medium fast action would be well suited for windy condition and Casts a very pleasant Cortland 444 Peach DT-6/WF-7 line. This classic Quad would be a great choice if you’re after larger than average quarry and an attractive price. $425 $350

The business end of the butt section has a reverse half wells grip and is fitted with the patented internal U/L metal seat with nicely struck Goodwin Granger stampings, and an exposed WC. The uplock mechanism works smooth and easy. The rod comes with a quality replacement bag with grommeted leather hag tab and era correct replacement tube. The stout medium-fast action throws a ton of line when paired with a Cortland 444 Peach DT-7 or WF/DT-8 (I prefer the DT-7). This affordably-priced rod would be right at home for jacks and landlocks and also a good choice for large terrestrials, streamers and dry/dropper fishing and/or where the wind blows and often. $295 $225
FE Thomas Special ~ 9’~ 3/2/3 ~ 5.3oz. ~ 7/8wt. ~ Serial No. 22 ~ VG (exceptions noted) ~ The FE Thomas Company built rods from turn of the 20th Century up to c. 1958-59. During their early years, and up through 1936, the rods were numbered with a die stamp on the bottom of the butt cap, usually starting with the number 1 and continuing until the end of that calendar year and then repeated again the following year beginning with number 1. At some point in the mid to late 1930s (some believe 1936-37), the FET Co. modified the die stamp to include both symbols and numbers. This FET classic has the number 22 stamped into the bottom of the butt cup and is believed to be a pre-1937 rod. This old world classic with 2 mid sections (1 mid section is 5” short) and 3 tip sections (the ferrule on 1 tip section was broken off and this tip also has a ¾” repair wrap between the last snake and tip top) features light browntone cane with a lightly swelled butt, red silks tipped black, red agate stripper housed in a silver frame, reverse twist hardened steel snakes, hardened steel tip tops, N/S ferules that give a give a solid pop when separated, but will need some cleaning to seat 100%, and a varnish finish that is beginning to craze and has some nicks and bag marks. The guides also need a thorough cleaning. The business end of the butt section has a cigar grip with tapered nose, railed German silver seat with D/L'ing slide band hardware and the hallmark FET petite WC with attached folding ring HK. The makers die stamp is present on the side of the seat near the bottom. The rod comes with what is likely the original brown bag and aluminum tube. The rod has a sweet medium action that will perform admirably in the hands of a patient caster. This nearly century-old classic is a super find for the FET enthusiast and with the value added mid and tip sections, is a perfect candidate for restoration. $295 $225
