Mike Brooks is an accomplihed fly tier who worked for the H.L. Leonard Rod Company from the late 1960s to mid 1970s. He has won international fly tying contests and some of his flies grace museums worldwide. That attention to detail has carried over from his fly tying and forms the base for the design principles Mike applies to handcarfting bamboo fly rods. From his own "Permacane" impregnation process and inovative tapers to the authentic Leonard Chinese Red silk wraps, Mike produces quality rods that looks as good as they cast. MV Brooks “Impressionist Midge”
~ 6'3” ~ 2/2 ~ 3.4oz. ~ 3wt. ~ NEW ~ The proprietary taper for his new Impressionist Series of fine bamboo fly rods has kept this innovative maker very busy for the better part of a decade. It features Mike’s own Permacane impregnated shafts which are flamed and cured to beautiful deep golden amber color and buffed to a fine luster, then wrapped in deep purple silks with dark ruby-hunt tipping. Matched tips and high quality furnishings including a black-housed amber agate stripper, chrome snakes and & tip tops. Smooth and tight fitting blued N/S ferrules give a resounding ‘pop’ when separated. Comfortable custom-made grip with Purple Heart hardwood accent rings at the nose. The walnut burl seat fitted with N/S D/L'ing cap and ring hardware with polished brass inlays compliment the rod nicely. Wound over WC. Folding ring HK. Comes with Mike’s standard sturdy green bag with two sets of dual ties and a brass capped black aluminum tube. This fast action light line wand throws tight loops with precision and is a joy to roll cast. It seemed right at home with a SA Ultra WF-3 and DT-3. Superb! MV Brooks Payne 100 ~ 7.5' ~ 2/2 ~ 3.6oz. ~ 4wt. ~ Those in the know widely regard Mike’s Payne 100 as his best taper. This tastefully done rendition features Mike’s own Permacane impregnated shafts buffed to a fine luster and wrapped in java silks tipped light brown. Matched tips, 3 x 3 spiral nodes, and high quality furnishings including a bronze-housed amber agate stripper, bronze snakes and & tip tops. Smooth and tight fitting oxidized N/S ferrules give a resounding ‘pop’ when separated. The female ferrule is fitted with a replica Payne ferrule plug. Comfortable custom-made grip is with Purple Heart, Red Heart, and Yellow Heart hardwood accent rings at the nose and a mortised walnut burl seat fitted with oxidized N/S D/L'ing cap and ring hardware compliment the rod beautifully. Oxidized N/S WC. Folding ring HK. Comes with Mike’s standard sturdy green bag with two sets of dual ties and a brass capped green wrinkle-finish aluminum tube. This smooth casting wand has a brisk medium to medium-fast action and throws tight loops with precision and exhibits virtually no line bounce whatsoever. MV Brooks Payne 96 ~ 6.5’ ~ 2/2 ~ 2 1/2 oz. ~ 3/4wt. ~ AS NEW ~ This neat little rendition completed by the mature hand of Oregon's Mike Brooks is based on famous Payne 96 taper. The rod features lovely light brown tempered cane with book matched tips, 3 around golden nodes, java silk windings with light brown tipping, an extra java wrap at the WC, stripping guide and ferrule stations, and three light brown signature wraps at the HK complete with a nicely executed varnish finish. Bronze stripper, snakes and & tip tops. Smooth and tight fitting oxidized N/S ferrules give a nice ‘pop’ when separated. Comfortable cigar grip continues down to form the cork seat fitted with oxidized N/S D/L’ing cap and ring hardware. Wound over WC. No HK. Comes with a soft linen bag and quality brass capped green pebble-finish tube. I casted this sweet little wand with a Cortland Sylk DT-3, SA Mastery DT-3, and Cortland 444 Peach WF-4 and DT-4 and the brisk, medium-fast action handled them with ease.
